Speed bumps: what are they and for what they are called so?

A lying or sleeping policeman, the back of a donkey, a dead man, a bump, a stopper, a wave, a vibrating barrier - as soon as they are not called in different countries of the world. The scientific name for speed bumps sounds like an element for forced speed reduction. These artificially created road irregularities (IDN) are a nightmare of motorists, they are trying in every way to go around and avoid hitting. But at the same time - this is a real rescue of residents of residential urban areas, a constraining factor and an effective way to calm the city traffic.
In 1906, the New York Times published an article on the need to use special devices that would limit the speed of traffic on the streets. In the same year, utilities installed the first such element on the streets of the American city of Chatham (New Jersey). The first IDN outwardly looked like an asphalt hill about 13 cm high. The speed bump in our usual form was invented by the Nobel Prize winner, American physicist Arthur Compton in 1953. The scientist watched how cars rush past Washington University, where he then worked.
H3: How to overcome artificial bumps?
It turns out that not all drivers know how to overcome the artificial obstacles to calm traffic, which in turn leads to increased wear on the car. Experts recommend the following. Gradually approaching the "bulges" on the road, you need to reduce the speed to a minimum, while the element itself is overcome with a set of speed. So, the weight of the car is transferred to its front. When accelerating, the weight of the car shifts back, which makes it possible to pass the obstacle more smoothly and without damage to the car.
Each such element for forced traffic damping has its own characteristics and design, which is responsible for reducing the speed of a car. Some may slightly slow down the car by 8-10 km / h, while others - by tangible 40-50 km / h. Depending on this, different types of IDN are installed in those places where they will be most effective: in parking lots, in underground parking lots, on busy streets and dangerous sections of the road.
So, a speed bump can be found in different designs: in the form of traditional trims for the entire width of the strip, round hemispheres, square "Berlin pillows", triangular, diamond-shaped and other forms of elements.
Sometimes the city authorities resort to non-standard solutions to the issue of calming traffic - the use of 3D-drawings for reckless people. Approaching them, the driver sees a three-dimensional image that attracts attention and forces to slow down.
